Features of choosing a floor hatch for the basement

If you want to provide access to the basement, then you need a hatch on the floor. It is available in a variety of sizes and materials depending on technical constraints and desired aesthetics.

The hatch in the floor should not be confused with the inspection hatch, which is a mandatory opening in the structure for access to various equipment (electric pipes, plumbing, etc.).

The floor hatch comes with a frame and cover that you can choose according to your needs. Most often it is laid flat on the ground, but there may be other styling options. It can be combined with a fixed or sliding ladder, as well as with an accordion ladder.

Hinged or removable lid — which is better?

Most floor hatches have hinges that can be opened and closed at will. With or without a handle, this type of sunroof can even be automated for easy remote control.

If you have chosen a model with a removable cover, you will have to remove it and put it back on to gain access to the room located under the hatch. This is an economical solution and should be preferred if the sunroof is not used frequently.

If the floor hatch is heavy, consider placing a jack on it to make it easier to open and to ensure complete safety.

Forms and materials of hatches

Usually such a product has a square or rectangular shape. The basement access hatch can be made from different materials…

Metal hatch in the floor

The metal floor hatch (steel, aluminum or stainless steel) can be used both indoors and outdoors, both in the basement and in the technical room. Fireproof and extra strong, it is ideal for safe opening with a padlock.

Hatch in wooden floor

Warm and aesthetically pleasing, the wooden floor hatch blends in perfectly with floors made of the same material (such as laminate and parquet). It can both merge with the decor (for this you need to choose identical wood) and stand out as a decor item. Wood does not transmit light, it has excellent sound and heat insulation. The hatch on the wooden floor is especially suitable for wine cellars.

Luke in the glass floor

The stylish glass floor hatch can be integrated into any type of floor. Knowing that it leaves visible the contents of the space it covers, this option is especially preferred for wine cellars. In this case, however, be sure to choose a glass that filters out UV rays that are harmful to the wine.
