Metal fence: its types and installation

There are different models of garden fences, the most common of which is a metal fence. His choice is often based on security considerations.

Types of metal fences

In total, there are three most popular designs of metal fences. There is a so-called single coil wire mesh. A few years ago, this was the most commonly used mesh, especially for residential complexes and sports fields.

There is also a welded wire mesh, which is in demand even now. A simple rotary fence and a welded fence are installed in the same way, that is, they put the posts first, and then the fence itself.

The latest model of metal fencing is the mesh panel. It is a rigid mesh built into the gear racks. The resulting fence is very durable and cannot be dismantled. It is excellent against ball games. This type of fence can be decorated with hedges or PVC windbreaks.

The only downside is that it takes longer to install compared to a traditional fence. Its installation also requires a bit more technique.

Methods for installing a metal fence

To put up a metal fence, you can use different methods…

Installing a fence with cement

For this method, you need to dig a square hole 1,15 to 1,31 feet wide. The depth should be 0,82 to 1,64 feet depending on the height of the post. Then pack 0,33 feet of gravel into the bottom of the hole. The base of the pillar is placed on this surface. This pillar should rise above the ground to a height equal to the height of the fence, that is, more than 0,16 feet.

Masonry on screw foundations

You can also use screw foundations to install a metal fence. In this case, the screw must be inserted into the ground, and then you need to work with an electric screwdriver from above.

Then you must block the screwdriver with the guide lever located 6,56 feet. Remember to check the verticality of the screwdriver with a level. Place the stand into the foundation, adjust its height and secure with the 3 screws provided in the base of the foundation.

Installing poles directly to the ground

The pillars can also be installed directly into the ground to a depth of at least 1,64 feet. You need to start from the extreme racks, then stretch the wire between them. The latter will simplify the layout of the intermediate racks. When you have installed all the racks, place the spacers to be attached to the rack with suitable clamps or metal bolts and nuts.

Tips for the correct installation of a metal fence

To successfully install your garden fence, start with the preparatory work, which consists of:

leveling the basement where the metal fence will be installed;
indicating with pegs the places where the corner posts should be placed;
rope tension between the stakes to easily determine the position of the posts (the distance between each post should be approximately 6,56-8,2 feet).

Then don’t forget to properly align the posts or put them on the same level as the ground. Use a metal ruler for this. Use a spirit level on the pole to make sure the poles are planted at the same depth.
